About 'Carved marble bust by Levasseur'
finely carved marble bust signed H. Levasseur, most likely referring to the French sculptor Henri Louis Levasseur (1853–1934), who was active in Paris and well-known for his allegorical and portrait sculptures.
Description:
Material: Carved marble in two tones – creamy white for the face, skin, and bodice, and a warmer, brownish marble for the head covering.
Depiction: A young woman in a traditional bonnet or headscarf, finely decorated with incised floral motifs. She wears a dress with detailed lace-like borders and a rose motif at the chest, showing Levasseur’s attention to feminine grace and delicate ornamentation.
Base: Mounted on a stepped green marble socle, which enhances its presentation.
Signature: Clearly inscribed H. Levasseur on the back/side of the bust.
Style & Period:
The bust reflects the Art Nouveau influence in its flowing lines, floral details, and romanticized portrayal of womanhood.
Henri Louis Levasseur was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1882 onward. His works often combined allegory, mythological themes, and idealized female figures.
Condition:
Overall very good, with minor natural veining in the marble.
No obvious visible damage from the photographs.
